XCLD - 25AFWRT103 - Theater and Gender
THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO LOW ENROLLMENT
Paul Shields
Thu, 9/19–11/21, 7–9 pm
Both the visual arts and theater are strongly influenced by culture. Witness the ways in which sexuality and gender have long determined theatrical presentation. Beginning with a look at Sophocles's Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex--which debuted in the patriarchal atmosphere of ancient Athens--we will continue our discussions focusing on the medieval morality play Everyman followed by Shakespeare's Macbeth. Finally, we will talk about Susan Glaspell's short play "Trifles," in which two women find themselves caught up in a murder investigation.
