This class introduces the basic techniques of observational painting from preparation of materials and color mixing to compositional planning. Students will be able to choose between oils or acrylics. Painting exercises and still lifes will be used to instruct students to the fundamentals of painting. Demonstrations of various techniques and approaches will be shown. Students will be shown examples of important historical and contemporary work. More advanced students will be challenged to develop more personal images and style. [BEG]

• Sketchbook or drawing pad (9" x 12" or larger)
• Pencils (HB and 2B recommended)
• Eraser
• Palette (disposable paper palette, wax paper, or reusable plastic/wood palette)
• Palette knife
• Rags
• Apron or paint shirt
• Plastic Container for water (acrylic) or glass jar with lid for solvent (oil)

• Small round brush (#2 or #4)
• Medium flat brush (#6 or #8)
• Large flat or bright brush (#10 or #12)
• Filbert brush (medium size) optional 
• Painting Surface, Canvas boards, Canvas paper, or Stretched canvases

• Titanium White
• Cadmium Yellow Medium (or equivalent yellow)
• Cadmium Red Medium (or equivalent red)
• Alizarin Crimson
• Ultramarine Blue
• Cerulean  Blue
• Burnt Sienna
• Yellow Ochre
