25AFWRT102 - Samuel Beckett’s Short Drama

Paul Shields

Tue, 9/17–11/19, 7–9 pm

Focus on the short plays of Irish playwright Samuel Beckett. While Beckett is most famous for Waiting for Godot, he wrote many short works for the theater. In Krapp’s Last Tape, for example, a loner sits in his den listening to old recordings of himself. In Play, Beckett envisions three characters stuck in urns talking about an affair. In Footfalls and Not I, women endure nightmarish repetitions of trauma. Each week, spend time studying a different short play, as well as viewing diverse Interpretations and presentations.

Course text: The Collected Shorter Plays of Samuel Beckett (Grove 2010).
