André Breton asserts in his 1924 Surrealist Manifesto that “We are still living under the reign of logic… But logical methods are applicable only to solving problems of secondary interest.” He goes on to suggest that surrealism, or “pure psychic automatism," is human’s primary interest. This studio course welcomes you to tap the subconscious or the divine to create surreal paintings in your medium of choice.

variety of oil paint colors

gamsol (odorless mineral spirits)

lint-free rags

variety of paint brushes (ignore brush labels—often “acrylic” brushes are better for oil paints)

3 canvases or wooden boards

Small glass jars for mixing paint

palette

box for transporting paintings
