ONLINE Women Painters of the 17th Century

Martha Chiarchiaro

Thu, 3/7 & 3/14, 2-weeks, 10-11:30 AM

As part of Women’s History Month, we’ll explore the tremendous contributions of women painters across Europe in the 17th century. We’ll begin in Italy with Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, Barbara Longi, Fede Galizia, Artemisia Gentileschi, Orsola Maddalena Caccia, and others, each unique in their work. We’ll examine the lesser-known works of Portuguese painter Josefa de Ayala e Cabrera and Spanish painter Maria Josefa Sanchez. Flemish painters will be illustrated by the paintings of Clara Peeters and Michaelina Wautier, while Dutch artists will be represented by Judith Leyster, Maria van Oosterwijck, and Rachel Ruysch. British artists will include Anna Maria Carew, Mary Beale, and Susannah Penelope Rosse while Louise Moillon from France and Maria Sibylla Merian from Germany will also be studied. $30
