Explore pastels by working with a variety of toned papers and subjects, including a portrait model. Experiment as you become comfortable with this rich medium. Continuing students welcome. 

Student Supplies

STUDENTS:   MOST OF WHAT IS LISTED BELOW IS INFORMATIONAL -  DO NOT BUY ALL!

WE WILL TALK ABOUT EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED IN THE FIRST CLASS!

Types of Soft Pastels

  • Rembrandt (soft) - Suggested for beginners.  Box of 30 half length sticks.  (Best to get) 
  • Nu Pastel (generally harder than Rembrant or Winsor Newton).
  • Sennelier - Hand-made French pastels (very soft)
  • Conte Pastels (harder)
  • Yarka (harder)
  • Schmincke (buttery, soft)
  • Unison (soft)
  • Rowney (soft)
  • Holbein (medium hard)
  • Girault(firm but soft)
  • Great American (soft like Schmincke)
  • Mount Vision (firm, fairly soft)
  • Unison  (firm but soft)

Paper, etc.

  • Strathmore "500" series - charcoal paper; 18" x 24"; 100% rag; assorted tints (recommended to start).
  • "Canson MiTientes" - available in various colors (recommended to start).
  • Strathmore "400" series - pastel paper in various subtle shades; 18" x 24" (not recommended).
  • Strathmore printmaking paper
  • D'Arches "Cover" printmaking paper
  • Wallis sanded  (No Longer Available!)   “Pastel Priemer” is  similar
  • Uart sanded paper
  • LaCarte Pastel Board
  • Pastelboard by Ampersand
  • Sabretooth
  • Windberg
  • Art Spectrum Colourfix
  • Schmincke Sannsfix
  • Velour
  • Pastelboard(Ampersand)

Fixative

  • Get Krylon - workable.
  • Sennelier makes a non-workable pastel fixative.

Miscellaneous

  • Drawing Board with newspaper for padding recommended.  (or just use a pad of newsprint for padding – clip to board – this is easier to do)
  • Medium stiff bristle or nylon brush (in small and larger sizes)
  • Soft brush, such as imitation or real sable, watercolor or makeup brush
  • vinyl eraser
  • Draw with medium vine charcoal and soft charcoal pencil
